Don’t underestimate the Blue Collar Philosopher and The Dudes
In storytelling, Deus Ex Machina is a plot device where something unexpected arrives to save the day from certain destruction. It originated in Greek and Roman drama and would take the form of a god showing up to save the day with a can of Whoop-Ass. Deus Ex Machina is Latin for “God from a Machine” and during the performance, the god would quite literally be lowered by a mechanical crane to the stage for theatrical effect. In modern times, it carries with it a connotation of intelligent tech, transhumanism and Artificial Intelligence. Some of the association comes from the literal Latin meaning and the connection to machines and I suspect, for those unfamiliar with the meaning, it has as much to do with the 2014 movie “Ex Machina” as anything. Regardless, the link seems appropriate.Â
“Dudeus Ex Machina” is a play on words then, playfully suggesting that our god is just a dude, perhaps dudes, arriving unexpectedly to save the day. In our use of the phrase, the dudes arrive with augmented AI derived super powers. Why? Because they’re just fucking dudes, and not likely smart enough or powerful enough to go it alone. And, in our case, we find it helpful to include AI in our research and discussions and “think tanking”, because it’s proving to be an invaluable problem solving tool.Â
You Golf?Â
All that stuff about dudes being of generally regular stock and AI being smart AF likely being true, don’t underestimate the dudes. If you’re a dude, you hang out with dudes, or you know dudes, then you get it. If you don’t, then to quote one of the most famous dudes from cinema, “The Dude” — from the classic Coen Brothers Movie The Big Lebowski — “Obviously, you’re not a golfer”.Â

With Dudeus Ex Machina, regular dudes get together as a think tank to apply the same no-nonsense and action-oriented approach to problem solving (okay, if we’re being honest there is some nonsense). A prime example of Bro-Mods and Dudeus Ex Machina in action is the Wright Brothers. Neither received their high school diploma, both were self taught, and they contributed more to manned flight and military aviation than all the elite American universities combined.Â
